ââLozengeââ contour plots in scattering from polymer networks
We present a consistent explanation for the appearance of âlozengeâ shapes in contour plots of the two dimensional scattering intensity from stretched polymer networks. By explicitly averaging over quenched variables in a tube model, we show that lozenge patterns arise as a result of chain material that is not directly deformed by the stretch. We obtain excellent agreement with experimental data
Cryopyrin-associated periodic fever syndrome manifesting as Tolosa-Hunt syndrome
Background Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS) is characterized by unilateral orbital pain, ipsilateral oculomotor paresis and a prompt response to treatment with corticosteroids. Several reports have demonstrated that the clinical features of THS are not specific to one causal aetiology and can lead to misdiagnosis. Case report We report the case of a patient diagnosed with THS after an episode of unilateral orbital pain and diplopia with demonstration of granulomatous inflammation of both cavernous sinus on cerebral magnetic resonance imaging and an immediate response to treatment with corticosteroids. Progression of the disease over the following years, accompanied by increasing signs of inflammation on cerebral magnetic resonance imaging and cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis, led to further diagnostic tests. Genetic analyses revealed a heterozygote low-penetrance mutation (Q703K) of the cryopyrin/NLRP3 gene compatible with a cryopyrin-associated periodic fever syndrome. Discussion This case report demonstrates that THS can be a central nervous system manifestation of cryopyrin-associated periodic fever syndrome, which therefore represents a differential diagnosis of THS, even in elderly patients
Visual snow syndrome after start of citalopram-novel insights into underlying pathophysiology
Purpose!#!Chronic pain is common in the older population and a significant public health concern. However, comprehensive studies on analgesics use in this age group from Germany are scarce. This study aims to give a comprehensive overview on the use of the most common therapeutic groups of analgesics in community-dwelling older adults from Germany.!##!Methods!#!A cross-sectional study was carried out using data from a German cohort of 2038 community-dwelling adults aged 63-89Â years. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were applied to assess the utilization of analgesics by age, sex, pain severity, pain duration, and locations.!##!Results!#!One out of four study participants was suffering from high-intensity or disabling pain. Approximately half of those taking analgesics still reported to suffer from high-intensity or disabling pain. Among analgesics users, occasional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) use was the most frequent pain therapy (in 43.6% of users), followed by metamizole (dipyrone) use (16.1%), regular NSAIDs use (12.9%), strong opioids use (12.7%), and weak opioids use (12.0%). In multivariate logistic regression models, higher age, higher pain severity, longer pain duration, abdominal pain, and back pain were statistically significantly associated with opioids use. Metamizole use was also statistically significantly associated with higher pain severity but inversely associated with pain duration.!##!Conclusions!#!A significant number of older German adults are affected by high-intensity and disabling chronic pain despite receiving analgesics. Long-term studies are needed to compare the effectiveness and safety of different treatments for chronic pain in older adults
Small angle neutron scattering observation of chain retraction after a large step deformation
The process of retraction in entangled linear chains after a fast nonlinear stretch was detected from time-resolved but quenched small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments on long, well-entangled polyisoprene chains. The statically obtained SANS data cover the relevant time regime for retraction, and they provide a direct, microscopic verification of this nonlinear process as predicted by the tube model. Clear, quantitative agreement is found with recent theories of contour length fluctuations and convective constraint release, using parameters obtained mainly from linear rheology. The theory captures the full range of scattering vectors once the crossover to fluctuations on length scales below the tube diameter is accounted for
How accurate are the non-linear chemical Fokker-Planck and chemical Langevin equations?
The chemical Fokker-Planck equation and the corresponding chemical Langevin
equation are commonly used approximations of the chemical master equation.
These equations are derived from an uncontrolled, second-order truncation of
the Kramers-Moyal expansion of the chemical master equation and hence their
accuracy remains to be clarified. We use the system-size expansion to show that
chemical Fokker-Planck estimates of the mean concentrations and of the variance
of the concentration fluctuations about the mean are accurate to order
for reaction systems which do not obey detailed balance and at
least accurate to order for systems obeying detailed balance,
where is the characteristic size of the system. Hence the chemical
Fokker-Planck equation turns out to be more accurate than the linear-noise
approximation of the chemical master equation (the linear Fokker-Planck
equation) which leads to mean concentration estimates accurate to order
and variance estimates accurate to order . This
higher accuracy is particularly conspicuous for chemical systems realized in
small volumes such as biochemical reactions inside cells. A formula is also
obtained for the approximate size of the relative errors in the concentration
and variance predictions of the chemical Fokker-Planck equation, where the
relative error is defined as the difference between the predictions of the
chemical Fokker-Planck equation and the master equation divided by the
prediction of the master equation. For dimerization and enzyme-catalyzed
reactions, the errors are typically less than few percent even when the

Rigorous elimination of fast stochastic variables from the linear noise approximation using projection operators
The linear noise approximation (LNA) offers a simple means by which one can
study intrinsic noise in monostable biochemical networks. Using simple physical
arguments, we have recently introduced the slow-scale LNA (ssLNA) which is a
reduced version of the LNA under conditions of timescale separation. In this
paper, we present the first rigorous derivation of the ssLNA using the
projection operator technique and show that the ssLNA follows uniquely from the
standard LNA under the same conditions of timescale separation as those
required for the deterministic quasi-steady state approximation. We also show
that the large molecule number limit of several common stochastic model
reduction techniques under timescale separation conditions constitutes a
